goodbye to PACIFIER

Blue had his first trip to the dentist this week and it went much easier than I expected. We watched some YouTube videos and talked a bit about what the dentist would be like the night before. And then we brought T Rex who went first. It was super-easy. And the dentist talked to Blue for a bit about getting rid of his pacifier. He had some story about Blue giving his pacifier to the little babies and Blue just kind of blank stared him. I don't think he was buying it. But when we got home I told him that tomorrow we would put our pacifier in the drawer with the other extra pacifiers and we would be all done with the pacifier. Then I reminded him that the dentist had told us "no pacifiers" and that they were starting to hurt our teeth. We talked about how it might be hard but that I knew he could do it! And the next night he did. He might have fussed for a few minutes and then he was out. Nap the next day was a different story. He asked for it and was sad. I repeated everything we had gone over before and he was okay with it. But he didn't nap and this is what his room looked like afterwards:

Graham found him perched up on his empty bookshelf! I prepared myself for the end up naps but he took a long one today so I think he just has to get used to a new way of settling down. I took this video right before today's nap:

Classic Blue there. Anyway, we waited too long to get rid of the pacifier but I will say it was much easier than I expected!

blue's BLUE jeans

Blue is very aware of what he and the people around him are wearing. During the height of the Bert craze, he refused to wear any item of clothing that could not be linked back to Bert in some way. He sees Graham go off to work every morning in blue jeans and boots so he also wants to wear his blue jeans and boots. Doing his "work" is very important to Blue. But it is really too hot here to wear blue jeans and boots all summer although I am sure he would survive. Either way, in the mornings I tell him "summer is for shorts" and he doesn't fight it anymore. But he does ask to wear his blue jeans as soon as he gets home. Usually I can hold him off until after nap which means I often come into his room and find something like this:

I moved his pants up to one of the top drawers on his dresser but he quickly found a work-around for that...

happy ELEVEN months

Can you believe it! The next one is the big ONE! This has been a harder month for Wiley-girl though. She wants to walk and talk and explore and see and touch everything. But she can't quite walk on her own and she has so many words to learn before she can just tell us what she wants. So she has this little noise she makes - uh uh - until you guess right and give her what she wants. And if you don't give her what she wants then she makes a whole different sort of noise. A MAD noise. That's right, she has a temper. But she is still mostly happy and easily amused. And she has two little teeth now!

what WE did

In May...

1. This was her first time to pull up. Now she is about to take off...
2-5. At Crow's Nest Farm on a field trip. He listened to instructions and kept his hands behind his back. Didn't want to lose a finger to those turtles!
6. He loves T. Rex.
7-12. Enjoying Aunt Ashley's visit and a special Mother's Day in Wimberley.

stomp STOMP clap

Blue is way into dinosaurs. If I had to rank his top three interests it would be Bert (Mary Poppins), The Jungle Book (the elephant march!), and dinosaurs in fluctuating order. Bert has actually been on the decline as of late which is fine by me. His narrow clothing options are better suited to winter. We have dinosaur puzzles and dinosaur books, and most importantly, dinosaur figurines. His early favorite was the Brachiosaurus but it was quickly outpaced by the more action-oriented T Rex. Lately, his Allosaurus has been the front-runner - I think mostly because our version makes noises and jumps when you push a button on his back. It is a fitting interest given Blue's enthusiasm for new words and a good challenge to try and remember all those names! Here is a song Blue learned at school:

distracted by CUTENESS

This is his "I just did something tooty, but maybe you didn't notice?" face...

Side note: I know I have said this before but I am still wondering how hot it has to get before Blue will agree that he does not need a jacket.

happy MOTHER'S day

To me! Ha. I wanted pics of me and the kids for Mother's Day and I got extra lucky in the form of Ashley Davis Tilly!

We tried to recreate a photo scene of Blue and me from when he was just about Wiley's age but it was mostly a fail. Blue has always been and is still my wallering child. Is that even a real word? Basically he likes to keep his body close to mine. Usually not in a sweet, cuddly way but in an active, acrobatic way. So those pics of him and me on the bed were easy. With Wiley, she was mostly just really confused why we were on the bed and what we were supposed to do. She wanted to get down and get moving. So we did. Thanks Ash!
